Radio Sources: Galaxies
Scientific paper
A group of four luminous radio sources lying within a circle 7 arc min in diameter has been investigated at radio and optical wavelengths. High-resolution VLA maps at 1.4 GHz and CCD frames taken through H and V photometric filters were used to identify three of the four sources with faint galaxies. The strongest radio source has FR I (edge-darkened) morphology and coincides with the brightest galaxy in a cluster at photometric redshift z ≍ 0.50. The two FR II (edge-brightened) sources are identified with galaxies 1.5 mag fainter. Our hypothesis that all four radio sources are in one large primordial cluster ≍ 3 Mpc in diameter is consistent with these data. If it is false, one of these fainter edge-brightened sources may be in a more distant (z ≍ 0.7) cluster. Spectroscopic observations are needed for further verification of this hypothesis.
