Extensive profile-fitting photometry of three V-band CCD frames containing the Sb galaxy NGC 5170 and two frames well removed from the galaxy are presented. The radial density distribution for the galaxy is in agreement with results for other galaxies. The problem of distance determination by comparison of the globular cluster luminosity functions is addressed using a Fisher-Tully measurement. The results suggest that the distance modulus is (m - M) = 32.3 + or - 0.3. From this value, the total population of the globular cluster system is found to be about 815 + or - 320.
