An observational test is proposed to discriminate between the explanations for the CV period gap between 2-3 hours. It is found that an extended sample of AM Her systems would make it possible to decide between evolutionary pictures in which systems cross the CV period gap and those in which they do not cross the gap. It is suggested that the distribution at orbital periods above 4 hr will show whether or not Am Her systems are usually born as intermediate polars.
