Major advances in the investigation of the atmosphere of Mars based on photographs and measurements transmitted by the Mariner and Viking spacecraft are reviewed. The chemistry, dynamical processes and evolution of the atmosphere of this planet are discussed and contrasted with those of the atmosphere of earth. Attention is given to mechanisms of wind and cloud formation and to methods used to estimate the amount of outgassing which has occurred on Mars.
