The frequency distribution of S0 galaxies, which is not intermediate between those of E and Sa galaxies, may imply that the S0 class encompasses two, partly luminosity-overlapping groups: bright S0s truly intermediate between E and Sa galaxies, and less luminous, disklike, lenticular galaxies. A third S0 subclass may encompass such diverse objects as NGC 5128 and NGC 5195, so that the S0 classification type could comprise several physically distinct, and only superficially morphologically similar objects.
