The South Pole offers such favorable factors for atmospheric Cherenkov-technique-based gamma-ray astronomy as high elevation, constant source-elevation angle, and visibility of high negative-declination sources. Atmospheric Cherenkov telescopic optics thus sited will require protection from radiative cooling and direct exposure to blowing snow, minimum component parts consistent with high redundancy, and filters to avoid the principal auroral bands. The basic design concept proposed employs three simple telescopes on a single mount.
