Optical spectra of the nucleus of the galaxy MCG 8-11-11, which lies inside the error box of the X-ray source 2A0551+466, have been obtained. The galaxy is a type 1 Seyfert, with hydrogen line widths of the order of 8000 km/s (full-width zero intensity). The identification of 2A0551+466 with MCG 8-11-11 is supported by variability of the X-ray flux density on a time scale of less than a month and also by the presence of a compact radio source coincident with the optical nucleus. If this identification is correct, MCG 8-11-11 is the first Seyfert galaxy to be discovered by means of its X-ray emission.
