It was shown by Fabian et al. (1975) that normal modes of a binary member may be excited by the tidal effect of its companion, causing energy transfer from the orbital motion to the star. In this paper, the eigendisplacements of a normal mode are decomposed into an irrotational and a 'weighted' solenoidal component and it is shown that only the irrotational component is responsible for the interaction with the companion star and for the energy transfer. The reason for this is the fact that the tidal gravitational field itself is an irrotatonal one and that the symmetries of interacting fields (i.e., the displacement and the tidal fields) are the same. Calculations are presented of tidal capture cross sections for a wide range of polytropic indices.
