The evolution of Einstein's general theory of relativity is reviewed starting from the first formulation of the equivalence principle in 1907. Special consideration is given to the formation of the geometrical concept of gravitation (1911-1913) and the development of the generally covariant equations of the gravitational field (1913-1915). The part played by Hilbert in the finding of the final equations of the theory is also discussed.
