Absolute ultraviolet surface brightness measurements in four wavebands centred on 2740, 2350, 1950 and 1550 A have been obtained from S2/68 observations of H II regions in the bar and south-western arm of the Large Magellanic Cloud. The observed ultraviolet colours are similar to those of a galactic main sequence B9 star. The south-western arm is found to have intrinsic colours similar to the 30 Doradus region, bluer than those of the bar. The detailed analysis of the sky data near the Large Magellanic Cloud reveals a charged particle feature of terrestrial origin, which is analogous to the South Atlantic Anomaly, but on a much smaller scale.
