A search has been made for a diffuse background light of tidally stripped material in compact groups of galaxies, so as to determine whether numerous strong gravitational encounters have occurred during the history of these groups. Stringent upper limits are set to the amount of this diffuse light, indicating that little or no dynamical evolution has occurred during the lifetimes of the groups. Therefore, compact groups must be only transient configurations occasionally forming within their surrounding looser groups. N-body simulations of loose groups show that the compact subsystems which occasionally form are temporary unbound configurations that are almost as compact as their projected distances indicate. The virial theorem can be applied to the compact groups with only a small correction factor.
