A new component was discovered in the radiation belt when low-energy
nuclear fluxes of carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen were measured in the
lower magnetosphere. The new component is a flux of anomalous oxygen,
with an intensity which is several times higher than that in
interplanetary space.
