Supercritical accretion on to an unmagnetized neutron star is investigated. It is assumed that excess matter is blown away from the system in a radially outflowing wind. Disc instabilities are found in the radiation dominated inner region and a model is proposed in which the disc accretion gives way to radial infall at an optical depth of order of unity in the outflowing wind. Radiative transfer effects are estimated in the infalling matter and a range for the mean energy of the emitted radiation is given. The model is applied to the bright galactic bulge X-ray sources with encouraging results. The observed variations in X-ray luminosity are attributed to spectral changes due to a variable accretion rate.
