The present treatment of aspects of sub-mm-wave astronomy relevant to heterodyne spectroscopy gives attention to the dense interstellar medium where the stars are forming, and notes results obtained to date; these encompass line surveys of heavy molecular spectra, light molecule spectroscopy, and atomic fine-structure spectroscopy. The significance of spatial data on atomic and ionized carbon is discussed in the context of carbon chemistry and the need for H2O and O2 observations for oxygen chemistry. The gas cooling process which allows clouds to collapse to form stars by means of the sub-mm-line emission is noted.
