Telescopic observing provides a wealth of information about solar system objects, but even more can be gleaned from sample-return missions. The Genesis mission, launched in August 2001, spent two years collecting particles of the solar wind and returned them to scientists at the Astromaterials Research and Exploration Science (ARES) Office, NASA's vault for extraterrestrial materials. More samples of the Comet Wild-2 will be added later. Although the entire haul will add up to less than half a milligram, scientists hope to learn a great deal about the material that gave birth to the solar system.
