The rationale and potential functions of the European Science Data and Operations Centre (ESDOC) are outlined. Currently, three competitive proposals for the provision of such a center are being prepared. In line with the European funding system (where investigations to be flown on SOHO are being paid for by national sources), ESDOC will be funded by the ESA member state providing it. Other efforts, namely the gathering of support through the Joint Organization for Solar Observations (JOSO) for ground based observations in the context of the SOHO (Solar and Heliospheric Observatory) mission, as well as the development of a vacuum ultraviolet transfer source standard to be used for radiometrically intercomparing spectrometric SOHO instruments, are described.
