The need to consider noise in the detection of possible extraterrestrial intelligence signals is examined. In this experiment 140 stars are observed in the declination ranges -38 deg to -15 deg and +39 deg to +90 deg. The functions of the equipment utilized at the Nancay Observatory, which included an eight level autocorrelator, a programmable oscillator, and computers, are described. The equations required to calculate a detection threshold are provided. The results reveal that an excessive number of stars exceeded the threshold; it is concluded that the analog and digital equipment within the observatory produces a non-Gaussian noise distribution and reduces sensitivity. Various methods of excising this discrete noise are investigated.
