The Imaging Compton Telescope, designated 'Comptel', is one of the four instruments incorporated by the Gamma Ray Observatory that is scheduled by NASA for launch in 1988. Comptel consists of two detector arrays, separated by 1.5 m, the upper of which employs a liquid scintillator while the lower uses Na I crystals. Each detector is surrounded by two veto scintillation domes to reject all charged particles. Analog and digital electronics are stored in a remote electronic assembly that is separated from the detectors. Comptel will study discrete gamma ray sources, diffuse galactic and cosmic emission, and broadened line emission.
