Viking, the first Swedish national satellite, is a research spacecraft for magnetospheric region exploration above the auroral zone and polar cap. Research by Viking will encompass the origin and acceleration of auroral particles, the spatial distribution of electric fields, the Birkeland currents, wave-particle interactions, and ionospheric imaging. Acquisition of telemetry data will take place at Esrange, Sweden.
