The possible West German role in the project SOFIA (Stratospheric
Observatory For Infrared Astronomy) is examined. Recent developments in
infrared studies in the BRD are reviewed, and the role of NASA's Kuiper
Airborne Observatory (KAO) in SOFIA is described. The optimal use of
SOFIA in the general BRD astronomical research plan is addressed.
