The authors combine new observations of broad linewidths for C IV λ1548 and Mg II λ2800 in quasars with previously published widths. C IV λ1548 is systematically broader. The kinematics and geometry of the broad line-emitting gas evidently depend on the ionization level. A single photoionized cloud is therefore a poor approximation to typical conditions in the line-emitting gas. These results also suggest that the acceleration mechanism is less efficient for more optically thick gas clouds.
