In the presence of thermal plasma, the absorption coefficient for the interaction of relativistic electrons with the synchrotron radiation they emit can become negative. Previous studies of this effect have been performed in limits which are analytically tractable, but for which the amplification is expected to be small. This paper presents calculations of absorption and emission coefficients in the regime where the greatest amplification is achieved. Radiative transfer effects are shown to constrain severely the extent to which this phenomenon could explain the high brightness temperatures deduced from low-frequency variability in extragalactic radio sources. Several geometrical and kinematic effects which could ease these constraints are discussed.
