The author presents a complete analytic normal mode solution for the linear perturbations of an infinitely slender, polytropic, non-self-gravitating torus rotating with constant specific angular momentum. He then examines more realistic thick tori by perturbing the analytic solution. All the instabilities are found to arise from the infinitely slender corotation modes and are symmetric with respect to the equatorial plane. In addition, exactly one unstable mode exists for every value of the azimuthal wavenumber m.
