X-ray UV and optical observations have shown that the K2V-dA binary V471 Tau has an extended atmosphere. By using the dA white dwarf as a probe we can observe the atmosphere along the line of sight to the hot white dwarf with a spatial resolution of less than 10000 km. We observe absorption lines of transition region species including Si III Si IV C IV and N V in absorption against the white dwarf photospheric continuum. The velocities are those of gas in co-rotation with the K star and not the gravitationally redshifted surface of the white dwarf. I will summarize the extent temperature and spatial and spectral variability of the atmosphere as observed with the HST/STIS.
I will present preliminary results from our simultaneous CHANDRA/LETG and HST/STIS observations obtained in January 2002.
