I will present the results of extensive surveys for X-ray emission from solar-like stars in the solar vicinity. The main results of these studies are: (a) All stars main sequence stars with outer convection zones are surrounded by hot coronae; (b) There exists a minimal X-ray surface flux similar to the surface flux from coronal holes; (c) Large variations in X-ray flux are uncommon at least for stars of spectral type earlier than M. The X-ray properties of stars will be compared to those of the Sun and it will be explored to what extent the magnetic activity paradigm holds for stars of type A and earlier and for stars below the MS cut off.
