Infrared spectroscopic measurements of the ionized envelope surrounding P Cygni in the hydrogen lines Br-alpha, Br-gamma and Pf-gamma, with a resolution lambda/Delta lambda = 800, are presented. IR and radio continuum data collected from the literature are used to determine the parameters of the mass loss, using a power law approximation for the velocity profile. In the frame of the same model the results are used to study the observed line equivalent widths. The analysis leads to a set of bn values which indicate an overpopulation of the lower levels with respect to the LTE values, as expected in a situation of high optical depth. The problem of the envelope ionization and the effect of Balmer continuum photoionization from the n = 2 level are briefly discussed. The observed variability of radio fluxes may be due to occasional increase in the mass loss that makes the outer part of the wind neutral.
