Mars Atmosphere: Convection

Scientific paper

The Navier-Stokes equations for a compressible viscous gas are used to construct a two-dimensional numerical model of convection with vertical wind shear. Cases of convection rolls that are parallel and transverse to the wind direction are studied. Conditions for stability of roll structures are determined for various Rayleigh numbers. These may prove useful in the study of the dynamics of the Martian atmosphere using data from the Mars-94 aerostat mission.
