Mars: Structure
Scientific paper
The question of structure of the Martian lithosphere is examined from the viewpoint of rock rheology and transition from the elastic state to dislocation creep. Depending on the thickness of the core and the temperature distribution near the surface the lithosphere may: 1) consist of the entire core and a portion of the mantle; 2) have a weakened layer in the lower part of the core; 3) be bounded by the upper core layer. The boundaries of both the core and mantle elastic layers run along certain isotherms and remain practically stationary over time. For a sufficiently thick core and high temperature gradient the Moho boundary is "screened" from vertical surface displacements, which is most probable in the central regions of the Tharsis plateau.
