Results are presented from measurements of isotope compositions of carbon in several SNC meteorites (shergottites, nakhlites, and chassignites), using newly developed ultrasensitive methods of analysis. Results showed that the carbon isotope contents of the SNC meteorites (which are believed to be of Martian origin) differ significantly from that of the Martian atmosphere. This is believed to be due to the fact that the ancient Martian atmosphere lost part of its CO2 to interplanetary space. Initial results for hydrogen showed that the isotope content of hydrogen in SNC meteorites is similar to that of Martian atmosphere determined in analyses of Viking samples. Analyses of nakhlites disclosed the presence of carbonate with a high content of C-13.
