A formula is obtained for the heating of a relativistic electron by induced Compton scattering of unpolarized isotropic electromagnetic radiation. It is shown that at a given electron density in quasars and nuclei of Seyfert galaxies, the fundamental radiation spectrum is distorted due to this scattering. If the distortions are insignificant, upper limits can be estimated for the electron density and the heating efficiency of corresponding sources. Such estimates are obtained for the quasar 3C 273D.
