A rocket-borne spectrophotometer has been developed which allows continuous broadband photometry from 3300 A down to 1100 A with a bandwidth of 100 A. The sensitivity is sufficient to measure blue stars with spectral classification B3 or below and visible magnitude 2.0 or less. The instrument can be calibrated to measure in absolute photometric units. The optical section of the instrument contains a coaxial Newton telescope with Al-MgF2-mirrors, a Monk-Gillieson step-scanning monochromator with a blazed grating and adherent EMR photomultipliers. Specially developed electronics using high-tension devices provides necessary signal processing and connection to the onboard telemetry. Instrument handling was specified to ensure that changes in calibration were reduced to a minimum prior to launch.
