Results are presented for a detailed analysis of the petrology and structure of a fissioned moon with emphasis on the fine structure of the upper mantle, the primary lithology and development of the crust, and the distribution of K, U, and Th in the moon. These results indicate that a moon of fission origin would have a feldspar-rich crust reaching an average depth of about 65 km, a KREEP-rich layer located at the interface between the crust and upper mantle, and an upper mantle consisting of peridotite reaching a depth of 300 to 400 km. A simple model for the distribution of K, U, and Th is discussed which successfully accounts for the contents of these elements in the various mare basalts and upland rocks. Another model is developed for the fine structure of the peridotite upper mantle. These models and the results of their analysis are shown to support the hypothesis that the moon formed as a result of fission from the proto-earth.
