The High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (HESSI), to be launched January 24, functions as an all-sky monitor in the x-ray and gamma-ray range in addition to its primary mission of studying solar flares. With nine large germanium detectors, it is the largest high-resolution gamma-ray instrument ever flown in space. HESSI will study gamma-ray bursts, gamma-ray lines from radioactive isotopes in the Galaxy, accreting and isolated pulsars, and other bright sources. I will report for the HESSI team on the first results and planned projects for non-solar research with HESSI.
