We review the effects of gravitational radiation reaction on the orbit of binary systems of compact bodies. We review the post-Newtonian (PN) approximation for equations of motion, including radiation reaction at the 3.5 PN order, based on a method of Direct Integration of the Relaxed Einstein Equations (DIRE)(M. E. Pati and C. M. Will, Phys. Rev. D 62, 124015 (2000).), and describe recent results for the radiation reaction of spinning bodies. We discuss the effects of radiation reaction on the phasing of gravitational radiation from inspiraling binaries, and discuss how matched filtering of waves by interferometric detectors can test both non-linear aspects of general relativity and scalar-tensor gravitational theories.
