Progress is reported on a mathematically rigorous multichannel relativistic scattering theory for a two-nucleon system that includes pseudo-scalar meson creation and annihilation. The fundamental interaction is a Yukawa-type interaction (with vertex function) in which a meson is emitted or absorbed by a nucleon. The associated fundamental Hilbert space has the Fock-space structure for mesons and bare nucleons. This instant-form theory is not a local field theory, nor is it based on the Bakamjian-Thomas construction. Asymptotic states are defined in terms of mesons and dressed nucleons and deuterons, all of which are freely moving. This leads to a two-Hilbert-space scattering theory, which is here carefully outlined. A time-independent multichannel transition operator is exhibited, general theoretical features (including the cluster property) are discussed, and some open problems are listed.
