The present state of the art of lunar science is summarized with emphasis on the most important results of the six Apollo missions. The findings of these missions are reviewed, the lunar geological composition is described, and lunar surface evolution is outlined. Profiles of the moon's outer skin are discussed, a model of the interior is presented, and the three basic theories on the origin of the moon (capture, fission, and binary accretion) are summarized. Prospects for a possible Lunar Polar Orbit mission are considered. The most important findings of the Apollo missions are shown to include the following: (1) the moon has never hosted any water or life forms of any kind, (2) the chemical composition of the moon is similar to that of the earth except for different proportions, (3) the moon is a differentiated body, (4) denser basalts on the lunar crust are the products of internally generated volcanic melts, and (5) no final conclusions can be made regarding the moon's origin.
