Models of the evolution of the earth's atmosphere are simulated mathematically, and the resulting present-day isotopic ratio (Ar-40/Ar-36) in the mantle given for each of them. Results are reported for differential outgassing experiments performed on recent submarine basalts to estimate this same ratio, and other estimates based on different techniques are critically reviewed. A minimum value of 2000 is inferred for this ratio. Evolutionary models compatible with this value and with other limitations are discussed.
