It is shown that the formation of negative disturbances of the F2-layer critical frequency (f0F2) at the geomagnetic equator during intense magnetic storms may be due to different mechanisms. Most frequently, these disturbances are connected with increases in the strength of the zonal Ey-component of the eastward electric field, leading to an intensified plasma transport from the equatorial F2-layer. Less frequently these disturbances are connected with a significant increase in the westward Ey-component, causing a displacement of the F2-layer at low heights into a region of elevated recombination rate.
