The resonance among Io, Ganymede, and Europa is described in such a way that its similarities with normal two-satellite resonance are demonstrated. A typical two-satellite resonance is briefly described, and it is shown that there are four arguments for which librations are possible in the three-satellite resonance (the long-period Laplace argument and three others similar to the libration arguments in the two-satellite case). The hypothesis is considered that the three-satellite resonance was formed by the action of tidal forces. It is concluded that the problem is too complicated for any firm conclusions to be made about the origin of this resonance and that the tidal hypothesis appears not to be a satisfactory explanation.
