X-ray emission from the Centaurus cluster of galaxies has been studied in the energy range 0.6-7.5 keV using the MSSL X-ray telescopes on the Copernicus satellite. Exponential and power-law spectra fit the data equally well. A value of the interstellar column density is found which is in good agreement with radio observations. The X-ray emission detected in the 12-minute field of view of the Copernicus telescope is much greater than would be expected on the basis of the Uhuru isothermal gas sphere model. This may indicate either that the size of the extended X-ray source is less than reported by Kellogg and Murray or that the galaxy NGC 4696 is a relatively compact source embedded in the general emission from the cluster.
