Analysis of extended x-ray emission requires a detailed understanding of all the contributions to the detected events. In particular, understanding the particle background is crucial for studying low surface brightness objects. We have analysed public data from the Chandra Deep Field North survey (which encompasses the Hubble Deep Field North), one of two 1 Ms surveys conducted by Chandra in the first two years of the mission, in order to characterize the background of the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS) instrument produced by energetic particles. We present a work-in-progress aimed at understanding and modeling the spatial, spectral, and temporal components of the particle background on the front-illuminated ACIS-I CCDs, particularly the on-axis I3 CCD.
