The first data from the south Muon Arm of the PHENIX detector was recorded during the RHIC run which started in the summer of 2001. The system was successfully commissioned and was used to collect data from Au+Au and polarized p+p collisions at √s_NN=200GeV. The Muon Arm is comprised of two components: the Muon Tracker to provide precision momenta measurements and the Muon Identifier, which is a sandwich of proportional chambers and steel absorbers, to identify muons and reject hadrons. The commissioning and preliminary performance results of the Muon Identifier will be discussed.
