Mrk 421 exhibited unprecedented flaring activity between January - March 2001 at energies above 250 GeV. Mrk 421 is the second gamma-ray blazar (at z=0.03) showing a spectrum with an exponential cutoff above 4 TeV (Mrk 501 at 6 TeV), indicating that this may be due to the absorption of TeV photons by the intergalactic IR background. A better understanding of the intrinsic source spectra will help to determine the origin of the cutoffs and their relation to the IR background. Measurements of spectral variability make it possible to test gamma-ray emission models. We present the average energy spectrum and studies of spectral variability using data from the Whipple 10m gamma-ray telescope.
