Low and intermediate mass stars in the range of 0.8 to 6 - 8 solar mass on the main sequence evolve onto the asymptotic giant branch of the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. In an AGB star, convective dredge-up lifts to the surface the ashes of H- and He-burning shells. Among those, Al-26 is particularly important because it plays a key role in gamma-ray astronomy and cosmochemistry. The possible production of Al-26 in AGB stars has been examined in detail. The low end (1 - 3 solar mass) of the mass spectrum is emphasized. Self-consistent calculations are given for a 3 solar mass AGB model, from the T-Tauri phase through the thermally pulsing phase. Special attention is devoted to the nucleosynthesis, especially that of Al-26. The contribution of the low-mass AGB stars to the Al-26 enrichment of the galactic interstellar medium is estimated. The Al-26/Al-27 abundance ratio in the envelope of the 3-solar mass model agrees with the mean values inferred for meteoritic grains, and the AGB stars of 1 - 3 solar mass may have added about 0.1 solar mass of Al-26 to the interstellar medium over the last million years.
