An approximate formula is derived for the rate at which electrons lose energy through the triplet pair production process. This expression is compared with the exact numerical results of Mastichiadis, and with energy-loss rates associated with Compton scattering, synchrotron emission, bremsstrahlung, and curvature radiation. This process is unlikely to be important in the formation of the spectrum of high energy cosmic-ray electrons, but could be important in models of ultra-high energy gamma-ray sources, or in pair-cascade calculations in the magnetospheres of neutron stars.
