The Sturrock-Uchida model is reexamined, and expressions are derived for the mean-square twist in terms of the statistical properties of the photospheric flow. An evaluation of these expressions for typical photospheric parameters leads to a lower rate of energy input than that obtained in the original model. The heating rate due to mean square translations of the footpoints of a flux tube is also examined.
