In modeling the expanding universe, one normally assumes that the largest scale dynamics responds only to the average matter distribution and that spatial inhomogeneities play no dynamical role on these scales. This assumption is realized explicitly in expanding Gowdy cosmologies where an effective stress-energy tensor formed from gravitational waves drives a background spacetime that can be shown to be spatially homogeneous asymptotically. A variable λ describing the background spacetime grows linearly in response to the wave ``energy'' rather than logarithmically as would occur in the absence of spatial inhomogeneities. Generalizing the Gowdy models to include ``twists'' introduces strong nonlinear effects leading to an almost unique background spacetime (λ is logarithmic again but with a single allowed coefficient and the average value of the energy is restricted to a particular value). These results are obtained using a combined numerical and analytic approach.
