In this contribution we discuss the idea of competitive accretion, a process whereby the gravitational interaction of gas and stars can naturally result in a mass segregated cluster, in which the mass function of protostars is very similar to that observed for the field stars. We describe the conditions required for competitive accretion to become the dominant mechanism that sets the mass of a star. We also highlight some of the challenges faced by observational studies in their attempt to quantify the importance of competitive accretion in real molecular clouds.
