Positive proof of a supernova (SN) is found in its distinctive spectrum, and long exposures via a large telescope (>1m aperture) are the norm because of the inherent faintness of the target in the spectroscope. The resultant spectrograms provide a wealth of information for professionals in excess of that required to confirm a SN. However Type Ia SNe at outburst typically show a broad absorption band from 600nm-630nm (Si II) and Type II hydrogen emission lines which place brighter SN within range of a low resolution spectroscope and a modest telescope.
