Out of all astrophysical and cosmological measurements, the cosmological constant stands alone as the most intriguing from the point of view of fundamental physics. Even though it appears to be relevant only at the largest distances, its small value poses a profound puzzle for our present understanding of quantum microphysics. I will explain this puzzle, why it is so tough, and how theoretical physicists are using it as a guide towards new fundmental principles and laws of nature.
